KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee’s defense was strong for a second consecutive afternoon, as it used four sets (22-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-22) to overcome LSU Sunday in Thompson-Boling Arena.
Tennessee (13-11, 7-5 SEC) used 11 total blocks to frustrate the Tigers and keep them out of sync offensively. The Lady Vols held LSU to a .080 hitting percentage – the lowest opponent hitting percentage against UT in SEC play since it held Auburn to .076 on Sept. 29, 2021.
Graduate Danielle Mahaffey led the way with 4.5 blocks while posting six kills on the offensive end.
The offense was just as potent as the Lady Vols tallied 62 kills in the win, hitting .283 as a unit. Senior Morgahn Fingall posted a career-best 27 kills in a .365 hitting effort to lead the team.
Sophomore Erykah Lovett tallied 14 kills on a .294 hitting day, while junior Jasmine Brooks added a season-high 12 kills in the Lady Vols’ win.
LSU (13-11, 7-7 SEC) captured the opening set, 25-22, as it threw up six of its seven total blocks in the match to slow down Tennessee. Sanaa Dotson led the Tigers with five kills in the frame. Fingall put down five kills for UT, followed by Brooks with four.
UT bounced back in the second, cruising to a 25-14 victory. Fingall again led the team with eight kills and hit .429 in the set. As a unit, the Lady Vols tallied 17 kills and hit .452 in the frame. UT’s net-front pressure resulted in five blocks.
Hitting errors doomed the Tigers in the third set as they committed eight and hit .-094 as a team. Tennessee capitalized on LSU being out of sync and rode its offense to a 25-12 win. Brooks and Fingall put away five kills apiece in the set.
LSU kept the fourth set close thanks to Paige Flickinger and Ella Larkin scoring four kills each, but Lovett – six kills – and Fingall – nine kills – charged up Tennessee’s attack to lead it to a 25-22 win.
With the win, UT captures its second SEC series sweep of the season and extends its winning streak to three straight.
