KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Lady Vols volleyball team suffered a pair of four-set defeats Saturday on the final day of the Tennessee Classic at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Tennessee (1-2) fell to Bowling Green (24-26, 16-25, 28-26, 22-25) before dropping the nightcap to No. 13 Purdue (25-20, 23-25, 18-25, 19-25).
Senior Morgahn Fingall and sophomore transfer Erykah Lovett played well for the Lady Vols in both matches. The attacking duo combined for 69 of UT’s 111 kills on the day. Against Purdue, Lovett tied her career-high in kills with 20.
Fingall and setter Natalie Hayward were named to the all-tournament team, with Hayward notching a double-double against BGSU with 34 assists and 13 digs. She dished out 41 assists versus the Boilermakers.
Hayward now has 23 career double-doubles at Tennessee and moves into a tie for ninth all-time in program history with Yuliya Stoyanova.
Match One – Tennessee 1, Bowling Green 3
Bowling Green (1-2) won the first match of the day as it hit .243 as a team and had three players finish with double-digit kills. Katelyn Meyer scored 17 kills, while Petra Indrova and Kat Mandly tallied 16 and 12, respectively.
For UT, Fingall notched 17 kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks against the Falcons. Lovett finished with a double-double of 12 kills and 16 digs.
The opening set featured 11 lead changes and 21 ties, but BGSU’s .279 hit percentage carried it to the first set victory, 26-24. In the second frame, the Falcons hit .424 as they pushed out to a 25-16 second set win.
The Lady Vols battled back in the third, winning 28-26 on the strength of 15 kills. Fingall put down four, while junior Jasmine Brooks equaled the number with four of her own. Lovett chipped in with three kills and freshman Keondreya Granberry scored two.
Meyer led the Falcons in the fourth as she put away five kills, carrying BGSU to a 25-22 fourth-set win.
Match Two – Tennessee 1, No. 13 Purdue 3
No. 13 Purdue (3-0) hit .327 as a team in the tournament finale as Eva Hudson (17), Madeline Koch (12), Raven Colvin (11) and Maddy Chinn (10) all finished with double-digit kills.
Tennessee won the opening frame 25-20 as it hit .300 as a unit. Fingall led UT with six kills in the set, while freshman Kadynce Boothe soared to five kills on a .455 hitting percentage. Four of Lovett’s 20 kills in the match came in the first set.
