Lady Vols Fall to No. 21 Western Kentucky, 3-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In its final home non-conference match, the Tennessee volleyball team fell in three sets (13-25, 21-25, 23-25) to No. 21 Western Kentucky Tuesday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.

UT (6-4) was plagued by errors on the night, committing 24 in attack. WKU (10-1) committed just 11 attack errors and hit .277.

Morgahn Fingall led the Lady Vols in kills at 13, while Natalie Hayward and Erykah Lovett each scored a service ace. Three players – Kadynce Boothe, Paola Laborda and Lovett – finished the night with a team-high 11 digs.

Western Kentucky started quickly as they hit .419 in the opening frame, scoring 13 kills and committing zero attack errors. The Hilltoppers were led in the set by Paige Briggs who put down four kills and Lauren Matthews who scored two kills and three blocks.

Boothe notched a team-leading four kills in the first set for UT but nine attack errors as a team stymied the Lady Vols’ offense.

WKU’s offense continued to run well, however, as it hit .278 in the set. Matthews put away eight of her team-best 15 kills in the second and earned three more blocks.

Both teams battled back-and-forth in the third set – tying the score 12 times and exchanging the lead on five occasions. Fingall and Lovett did the damage for the Orange & White, putting down four kills each.

For Western Kentucky, Matthews tallied five kills and three blocks in the final frame. The WKU middle blocker finished the match hitting .406 with nine total blocks. She led all players with 20.5 points.
