Lewis Women's and Men's Volleyball Teams Both Earn AVCA Team Academic Award


LEXINGTON, Ky. — The American Volleyball Coaches’ Association released its Team Academic Award list Wednesday (July 17), with the Lewis women’s and men’s volleyball teams both earning honors. On the women’s side, it’s the Flyers’ 15th consecutive year earning the award.

Lewis women’s volleyball, led by head coach Lorelee Smith, earned the top team GPA among all athletic teams at the university this year at 3.76 including six student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs in 2023-24: Hannah Alvey (Mapleton, Ill./Illinois Central College), Rachel Kaczorowski (Carpentersville, Ill./Harry D. Jacobs), Emma O’Neill (Papillion, NE/Papillion La Vista South), Bella Ray (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic), Gracie Schultz (Minonk, Ill./Fieldcrest High School) and Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West). A total of 18 Flyers earned Academic All-GLVC honors from the squad.

Lewis men’s volleyball, led by head coach Dan Friend, earned a team GPA of 3.51, with three student-athletes posting perfect 4.0 GPAs for the year: Nico Paula (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Preparatory School), Luke Pekol (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy), and Zach Pekol (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy). A total of 21 Flyers earned Academic All-MIVA honors in 2023-24.
