COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson football team is not the only one welcoming Campbellsville University to Columbia this week. Before the two rivals meet on the turf on Saturday, they will throw it down on the hardwood of Biggers Sports Center on Wednesday evening in the season’s first edition of the “Battle of Highway 55.”
In what will be the 58th all-time meeting between the two programs, the Blue Raiders are hopeful they can rekindle their winning ways against the Tigers after having their 19-match win streak in the series snapped in October of 2021.
Campbellsville, on the other hand, has not won back-to-back contests against Lindsey Wilson since 2011, but is rolling into this week with wins in each of its first four conference bouts.
The Tigers are led by first-year interim head coach Peyton Johnston, who spent her undergraduate years as part of the Blue Raiders’ volleyball team between 2017 and 2020 where she helped the program win its only NAIA national championship to date, as well as four Mid-South regular season and tournament titles.
Through nine matches this season, Campbellsville sports the conference’s second-best digs per set ratio at 17.48, and third-highest blocks per set mark of 2.02. Fifth-year Andrea Laboy and sophomore McKenna Barfield pace the Tigers’ defensive efforts with 157 total digs and 23.0 total blocks, respectively.
On offense, sophomore Molly Shannon ranks fourth among the league’s best attackers with an average of 3.36 kills per set, and junior Hannah McGill falls in not far behind in ninth overall with 2.79 kills per set.
As far as total successful attacks go, Shannon sits just inside the top 20 and is actively tied with Lindsey Wilson’s Savanah Pippin and Alix Stoermer with 111 kills.
The Blue Raider duo have been a big boost to the team’s presence around the net, as not only do they lead the team in kills but total blocks as well, with 22.5 and 19.0, respectively.
Defensively, Natalie Ackermann and Camryn Rich continue to boast team-highs in digs, while the latter of the two is coming off of her 13th-career Mid-South Setter of the Week accolade.
Wednesday’s action gets underway at 4 p.m. CST with the junior varsity contest, followed by the varsity showdown at 6 p.m. CST.
Live stats and video will be available for the varsity match. Gameday tickets will be sold at the door.
