HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –
On the first day of the inaugural AVCA Pairs National Championships today, Washington’s two duos played three matches apiece to earn their spots for the weekend’s bracket play. Chloe Loreen and Natalie Robinson, the tournament’s No. 5 seed, went 3-0 in their pool.
Robinson and Loreen had three straight-set wins, the first one being the closest, as they started with a 22-20, 21-18 win over Hidalgo/Scuderi of Southeast Louisiana. From there the senior pair beat South Carolina’s Crews and Mackenhausen, 21-10, 21-15, and they finished the day with a 21-14, 21-15 win over Bianchi/Vukobrat from Florida International.
Teagan DeFalco and Piper Monk-Heidrich went 1-2 in their pool today, with close matches each time out. They dropped a three setter to Oregon’s Laita/Wetton, then pulled out a marathon three-setter in their second match against Ebertin/Peters of Tulane, winning 9-21, 21-18, 21-19. Then against the top seed in their pool, Ferary/Ferary of Georgia State, the Dawgs dropped a 21-18, 21-19 decision.
By virtue of winning their pool, Loreen and Robinson earn a first round bye in Saturday’s bracket play, and will take on the winner of a Stetson-Long Beach State match in the second round at 10 a.m. Pacific. Monk-Heidrich and DeFalco will play in the first round against a duo from Coastal Carolina at 8 a.m. Pacific
