PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior libero/defensive specialist Madyson Chitty was named the Rutgers recipient of the annual Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for volleyball on Wednesday.
The Lewis Center, Ohio native appeared in all 32 matches in 2022 totaling 305 digs and averaging 2.77 marking the fifth-most digs by a junior in RU history. She led the team in digs in 17 matches and recorded double-figure digs in 14 matches including a career-high 24 digs against Fresno State at the College of Charleston Classic. Her 24 digs against the Bulldogs tied for the most digs in a three-set match in the rally era and the most digs in a three-set match since 2014. Chitty also served up 17 aces on the season tying her career-high for a third time with a trio of aces against the defending SoCon Champion The Citadel at the College of Charleston Classic. The junior Scarlet Knight also added 59 assists on the season logging a career-high eight helpers at Michigan State.
Chitty enters next season ranked fourth in the rally era in career digs per set (3.08) and sixth in the rally era in career digs (880). She will need only 10 more digs to surpass former teammate Inna Balyko (2018-21) for fifth in digs and 120 more digs to become the fourth Scarlet Knight of the rally era and 10th Scarlet Knight overall to capture 1,000 or more digs in a career.
An Academic All-Big Ten honoree in 2021, Chitty is majoring in sports management.
