ELMIRA, N.Y. – Elmira College Men’s Volleyball head coach Ryan McDonough ’19 announced his 2023 schedule on Tuesday afternoon, which features a road-heavy slate for the Soaring Eagles. The Purple & Gold come into the new season after having qualified for its first United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Tournament since 2018 just a season ago.
The regular season officially kicks off on Saturday, January 21 when heading to St. David, Pennsylvania for a pair of matches against Eastern University and Marymount, hosted by Eastern. The Soaring Eagles have never matched up with the Eagles, and are 0-3 all-time against Marymount with its last matchup coming just a season ago.
A week later, the Soaring Eagles are back on the road as part of its seven-game road trip to begin the season, taking on Hilbert and SUNY Poly at the Hafner Recreation Center in Hamburg, New York. All-time, Elmira has posted a 7-3 record against the Wildcats, with its last win coming in straight-sets fashion on Jan. 21, 2022 when Jordan Peiser ’23 and Oscar Munoz Trinidad ’23 combined for 23 kills and a hitting percentage over .500%.
From there, the Soaring Eagles play its first solo match on February 3 when heading to Chester, Pennsylvania to take on Widener. Elmira has never matched up with the Pride, who compete out of the Middle East Conference. Just a day later, Elmira stays on the road in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania to square up against the Blue Jays from Elizabethtown and an opponent to be named later.
The Soaring Eagles make its first appearance at home on February 15 when taking on Misericordia. The matchup marks the first of three consecutive matches Elmira will play at home, with only five home matches slated for the season. All-time, EC has posted a 4-0 record against the Cougars dating back to 2018, and has recorded two victories in straight sets. From there, the Soaring Eagles jump into conference play against NYU on February 19. The Soaring Eagles have been unable to beat the nationally-ranked Bobcats since 2014, which happened inside of Speidel Gymnasium.
Three days later, Elmira wraps up its largest homestand of the season with a non-conference matchup with the Golden Flyers from Nazareth. EC takes on the opposition twice on the year (March 8), with the other serving as its UVC matchup in Pittsford, New…
