ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan volleyball team completed the series sweep over Rutgers on senior night with a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-9, 25-11) inside Cliff Keen Arena on Friday evening (Nov. 25).
Michigan (17-13, 8-12 B1G) was led by Jess Mruzik with 12 kills, while May Pertofsky chipped in 10. On the defensive side, the team out-blocked Rutgers 9-2 with Jacque Boney picking up four. Hitting at a .457 team clip, the Wolverines combined for 45 kills, four aces, 37 digs and nine blocks.
In the first set, Rutgers (8-24, 2-18 B1G) got out to a quick start and pulled to a 9-6 lead before Michigan tied it up at 9-9 after a block from Boney and a cross-court kill from Mruzik. Rutgers went on another 4-0 run but Michigan chipped away at the lead, pulling even at 20-20 off a Mruzik kill. Three consecutive kills from Mruzik followed, plus one from Jess Robinson and a Rutgers service error to give U-M the 25-22 come-from-behind first set victory.
The second set was all Michigan from start to finish. The Wolverines pulled to a quick 12-4 lead behind a balanced offensive attack with ten kills in the first 12 points. Michigan never took its foot off the gas as the Wolverines rallied to take the second set, 25-9. Collectively, the U-M hit a staggering .680 with Serena Nyambio, Haley Hallgren and Pertofsky leading U-M with four kills apiece. Jenni Liu came into the set late and picked up her first assists of the season.
The third set went just like the second, with Michigan controlling the entire frame en route to a 25-11 win for a 3-0 match victory. Michigan had 16 total players appear in the final set, and Mruzik led the charge with three kills.
With the victory, Michigan completed the series sweep of Rutgers without dropping a single set.
Friday night’s game marked the end of the regular season for the Wolverines. The NCAA Selection Show will air live on Sunday (Nov. 27) at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
