For the third straight week, Cortland senior defensive specialist/libero Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) has been chosen as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Volleyball Defensive Athlete of the Week. Her latest honor is for the week ending Oct. 6.
Martens was a force on the defensive end for Cortland across three matches, registering 47 digs for a 4.70 digs per set average She added in 16 assists and six service aces across three matches.
Martens had a 22-dig performance on Wednesday against William Smith, while also adding nine assists and an ace. She then had 16 digs in a sweep over Oswego on Friday evening, while chipping in four assists and an ace. In a sweep of Canton on Saturday, Martens had nine digs, four service aces, and three assists.
In 58 sets over 18 matches this fall, Martens is averaging 5.0 digs per set and has a .964 serve reception percentage. She currently leads the SUNYAC in digs per set.
Cortland (13-5, 2-0 SUNYAC) will play SUNYAC matches Friday night at Plattsburgh and Saturday afternoon at Potsdam. The Red Dragons also will play a non-league match later Saturday afternoon at Clarkson, about a mile trip after their match at Potsdam.
