Monaghan Named FH Rookie of the Week; Eight Named to Honor Roll


TROY, N.Y. – First-year forward Maggie Monaghan of the Union field hockey team was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week and eight Union College student-athletes were named to their respective sport’s honor rolls for the week ending October 6.
 
Field Hockey Rookie of the Week: Maggie Monaghan
Monaghan scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to lead Union to a 3-2 victory over #18 University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon, improving the team’s record to 7-4 (1-1 Liberty League) and marking its first win over a nationally ranked team since 2008. Monaghan is tied for fourth on the team in goals with three to go with one assists through 11 matches.

Men’s Cross Country: Ryan Russell
Russell had an excellent day for Union at the Paul Short Run on Saturday, placing seventh out of 378 runners in the Men’s Brown 8K race with a time of 24:51.1. The senior went out with a 5:04.4 mile to sit in the middle of the pack but made his first move soon after that, jumping up to 28th place at the 5K mark. He continued his climb by moving into ninth at the 6.3K mark and closed with a nearly five-minute mile over the final 1.7K to move up two more spots into seventh. As a team, Union finished 21st against many of Division III’s top teams.
 
Field Hockey: Sophie Brady
Brady made 10 saves to backstop Union to a 3-2 (2OT) win over #18 Rochester on Saturday, the team’s first win against a nationally ranked team since 2008. She made two saves and helped Union fend off more than 15 minutes of player-down time in overtime to secure the victory. She also made five saves earlier in the week against another nationally ranked opponent, #12 Wesleyan.
 
Football: Patch Flanagan
Flanagan accounted for more than 300 total yards on Saturday against St. Lawrence, rushing for 204 yards and throwing for 107. The junior averaged 12.0 yards per rush on 17 carries, including an 87-yard touchdown run that is the fourth-longest in school history.
 
Women’s Golf: Iyene Essien
Essien was Union’s top scorer at the Union Fall Invitational, carding back-to-back rounds of 80 to finish in second place at 160. She carded five birdies on the weekend to earn her third top-five finish in four events this fall.
 
Men’s Soccer: Owen Everett
Everett scored the first goal of the game and finished with a game-high five…
