Rwanda swept hosts France 3-0 (25-9, 25-8, 25-11) at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games women’s sitting volleyball tournament in North Paris Arena on Wednesday, clinching a seventh-place finish.
Captain Liliane Mukobwankawe’s sensational serving display was the cornerstone of Rwanda’s commanding victory, as they capitalised on numerous French mistakes.
Mukobwankawe delivered 12 aces, alongside three attacks and a block, leading her team with a stellar scoring performance. Solange Nyiraneza added five aces and a total of nine points, while France’s captain Jenna Agbodjan Prince chipped in with six points, including three attacks and three aces. Rwanda dominated at the service line with 23 aces, exploiting 28 French turnovers to maintain control.
In the first set, Rwanda surged ahead, with Nyiraneza’s blistering serves forcing early French errors. Mukobwankawe followed with a string of serves that disrupted France’s defence, with her teammates complementing on attack to the lead to 22-8. A powerful ace from Sandrine Nyirambarushimana brought the score to 24-9, and Rwanda closed the set with a well-timed attack from Clementine Umutoni to win 25-9.
The second set followed a similar pattern, as Mukobwankawe’s pinpoint serves overwhelmed France, pushing the score to 15-6, A service blunder by France and a service ace by Rwanda secured the set 25-8 for the African side.
In the third set, France managed to keep the score close early on, but Rwanda soon pulled away with a series of aces and French errors. Nyiraneza’s block at 23-11 paved the way for Mukobwankawe to finish the match with back-to-back aces, sealing the set 25-11 and confirming Rwanda’s comprehensive victory.
