SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior Nikki Newcomer of the Union College women’s volleyball team was recognized for her contributions on the court and success in the classroom with a spot on the 2023 Academic All-District Team, selected by College Sports Communicators and announced on Tuesday afternoon.
To be nominated for College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of a team’s sets or start at least 66 percent of an institution’s matches, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and reach sophomore athletic and academic standing at the school. Academic All-District honorees are considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America ballot, the results of which will be announced in January.
Newcomer earns Academic All-District honors for the first time in her career after another solid season at the net for the Garnet Chargers. She started 19 of the team’s 26 matches and appeared in 22 matches overall during her final year, ranking fourth on the team with 125 kills and adding 73 digs and a career-high 16 blocks. She recorded three matches of 10 kills or more, including a season-best 13 on .321 hitting against Catholic on September 2, and posted a season-high .412 hitting percentage with eight kills on 17 swings against Curry on October 7.
In three seasons on the court for Union, the anthropology and geology double major put down 283 kills with 212 digs and 28 blocks in 56 matches. Off the court, the Dean’s List student conducted research in Ecuador over the summer that she presented at the Geology Society of America Conference in October.
With Newcomer’s selection, Union student-athletes have earned 179 Academic All-District honors since 2001. The women’s volleyball team ranks seventh among all Union programs and is third among Union women’s sports with 10 honorees over that span.
