LOS ANGELES — No. 1 UCLA (8-0) posted two more wins on Saturday in its home opening weekend at Mapes Beach while hosting the Pac-12 South Invitational. The Bruins opened with a 5-0 sweep of Oregon (2-5) at 10 a.m. PT and then completed day one with a 5-0 sweep of Arizona State.(4-2) at Noon. UCLA didn’t drop a set in either dual on the day.
In the first dual against the Ducks, the Bruins went 10-0 in sets, recording their fourth 5-0 sweep of the young season.
The Bruins went up 1-0 on court four as senior Rileigh Powers and graduate student Haley Hallgren, made quick work of the Ducks’ Ashley Schroeder and Natasha George, 21-14, 21-8.
UCLA put another point on the board when junior Peri Brennan and graduate student Abby Van Winkle defeated Oregon’s Bea Wetton and Ella Tyus, 21-15, 21-11.
Sophomore Natalie Myszkowski teamed up with graduate student Jaden Whitmarsh to clinch the dual on court five with an easy 21-9, 21-13 win over Lolo Folau and Valerie Peterson.
Senior Lexy Denaburg and freshman Maggie Boyd took down Oregon’s Chloe Brown and Zoe Almanza, 21-7, 21-15 on court one to put UCLA up 4-0.
Junior Tessa Van Winkle and sophomore Sophie Moore completed the 5-0 sweep on court three, facing little resistance from the Ducks’ Abby Plevin and Batia Rotshtein, 21-13, 21-9.
Graduate students Marlie Monserez and Kelli Greene-Agnew rolled Josie Griffiths and Presley McCaskill, 21-10, 21-2, in exhibition play on court six.
In the second dual against the Sun Devils, the Bruins went 10-0 in sets, recording their fifth 5-0 sweep of the year.
Senior Devon Newberry made her triumphant return to the lineup and partnered with Boyd on court two to take down Arizona State’s Taryn Ames and Sarah Water, 21-12, 21-15.
Powers and Hallgren made it 2-0 UCLA with a 21-11, 23-21 win on court four over ASU’s Adriana Nieves-Papaleo and Carys Thomas.
Denaburg and Abby Van Winkle clinched the Bruins’ win with a 21-19, 21-17 win on court one over the Sun Devils’ Lexi Sweeney and Kylie Wickley, 21-19, 21-17.
