No. 11 Washington State finishes off season sweep of Huskies in three sets

SEATTLE — Magda Jehlarova finished with a team-leading 11 kills, Pia Timmer added 10 kills with nine digs, and No. 11 Washington State (24-7, 14-6 Pac-12) swept Washington (16-15, 7-13 Pac-12), 3-0 (25-23, 25-14-25-20), Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.  The Cougars hit .326 (44-13-95) on the night as they finish off a season sweep of their in-state rivals without dropping a single set, giving head coach Jen Greeny the highest win total (24) of her 13-year career with the win in Friday’s regular season finale.

Argentina Ung finished the match with six kills (6-0-8, .750), 32 set assists, five digs and one block assist, and the Cougars improved to 13-0 on the season when hitting .300 or higher as a team.

Timmer’s nine digs give her over 1,000 for her career, making her the first player in the program’s history to record 1,000 or more digs and 1,500 or more kills, as she entered the night with 1,600 kills in her career.  Timmer was only the third player in WSU history with 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs, as she joined assistant coach Shannon Hunt (Wyckoff) and LaToya Harris, with her 1,000th dig early in Friday’s Apple Cup.

Jehlarova had five kills with zero errors, and Katy Ryan and Timmer each added three kills, while Timmer tallied a quick five digs as Washington State won a tight first set, 25-23.  Greeny called a timeout after a Husky ace gave UW a 23-22 lead, and Washington State went on to win the ensuing three points to close out the first set.

Washington State jumped in front 7-2 to begin the second set and never looked back, building a double-digit lead with a .433 hitting percentage (15-2-30) as a team.  Timmer tallied four of her 10 kills, and Iman Isanovic and Jehlarova each added three in a comfortable 25-14 win for the Cougars.

Isanovic took over in the third set, leading the Cougars with five kills as Washington State again held Washington to a match-low .156 hitting (9-4-32) and tallied its first two blocks of the match in a 25-20 third set to close out the road sweep.

Washington State will now await the announcement of their seeding in the 2023 NCAA Tournament Selection Show this Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. PT on ESPN.
