No. 12 Lewis Men's Volleyball Sweeps No. 16 George Mason Friday


ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The No. 12 Lewis University men’s volleyball team swept No. 16 George Mason in straight sets 3-0 at Neil Carey Arena Friday (Jan. 26). The Flyers hit .322 for the match while George Mason hit .167.

SET BREAKDOWN

Set 1: Lewis 25, George Mason 22

Both teams each traded the first seven points before George Mason scored two straight for a 9-7 lead. Moments later, GMU led 12-9 before Lewis rallied off three straight points which were all blocks to tie it at 12-12. 

The two teams went back-and-forth again before Lewis scored four straight points which was started by a kill from Haber to make it 21-18 Lewis. The Patriots cut it down to 22-21 late in the first set before Lewis was able to hold them off and win 25-22.

Set 2: Lewis 25, George Mason 19

Lewis started the second ahead 7-2 after a block from Michael Sack (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Laurence) and Roquet. George Mason responded with back-to-back points to get back in the set.

The Flyers never trailed in the set and led the whole way. The closest the Patriots made it was 11-9 in favor of Lewis.

Back-to-back kills from Simpson and Haber extended the lead out to 13-9.  GMU made it 18-14 Lewis before the Flyers rallied off four straight points capped off by a kill from Prayer.

The Patriots tried one last push after scoring three straight points which made it 23-18 Flyers but Lewis was able to come out on top 25-19.

Set 3: Lewis 25, George Mason 20

GMU scored the opening point before Lewis rallied off four straight capped off by an ace from Morgan. The Patriots responded with back-to-back points to make it 4-3 Lewis. 

George Mason tied the set at 6-6 before Lewis scored seven straight points capped off by a service ace from Prayer. The Patriots responded with three straight points before the Flyers got three of its own after two kills from Morgan and an ace from Roquet. 

GMU had one last push to make it 20-16 but back-to-back kills from Roquet basically sealed the set and the match. George Mason scored the next point before back-to-back kills from Nathan DeGraaf (Cranberry Township, Penn./Seneca Valley HS)
