SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: Lewis 28, St. Francis 26
St. Francis started strong, taking an early 6-3 lead. Lewis charged into the lead off of a 5-0 run with three kills, including two by Ray.
The Fighting Saints responded with a 4-0 run of its own to regain the lead. The two teams then went back-and-forth until another 4-0 St. Francis burst made it 17-12 for the Saints.
The Flyers struggled to gain any ground, still trailing by five at 22-17 before a 4-0 run cut the deficit to one. St. Francis reached set point at 24-22, but Lewis then had back-to-back kills by Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) and Ray to force the set to go past 25.
The Fighting Saints had another set point opportunity at 26-25, but the Flyers scored three straight points, with two kills by Ray, to win the opening set.
Set 2: Lewis 25, St. Francis 11
Lewis looked much stronger starting set two, taking the first five points and prompting a St. Francis timeout. The Flyers kept pushing, using another 5-0 run to build a 12-2 lead.
After two points for the Fighting Saints, Lewis took 10 of the next 12 points with seven kills and back-to-back service aces by Kaczorowski.
The Flyers reached set point at 24-8 before St. Francis scored three straight points, but an attack error finished off the set in Lewis’ favor. The Flyers hit .355 in set two, while holding the Fighting Saints to a .000 attack percentage.
Set 3: Lewis 25, St. Francis 18
Following a 2-2 start to the third set, Lewis took the lead on a 4-0 run including two kills by Holubar. The Flyers kept pushing, increasing the lead to five points at 12-7.
Then, St. Francis took six of the next eight points including four kills to come back to within one. Shortly after, Shroba and Ray led a 5-0 Lewis run with three kills and a block between them.
