NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The No. 15 Lewis University men’s volleyball team outdueled No. 16 California State-Northridge, winning 3-2 on the road Saturday (Feb. 24).

SET BREAKDOWN

Set 1: Lewis 25, CSUN 20

Both teams traded points early until CSUN went on a 3-0 run to take an 8-6 lead. Later in the set, Lewis took the lead back with a 4-0 charge including a kill by Daniel Haber (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) to make the score 13-11 Flyers.

The Matadors got back to a tie at 15-15 but moments later a 3-0 push from Lewis capped off by a solo block from Wymoczyl made it 19-16 Flyers. CSUN got back to within one at 21-20 but the Flyers took a 4-0 run to secure the set on back-to-back attack errors by the Matadors.

Set 2: Lewis 25, CSUN 15

Lewis took a 5-1 lead early in the second set with two kills and a service ace by Morgan. Later, CSUN used a 4-1 run to get the set tied, 10-10.

The Flyers used a 6-2 run with two kills by Roquet to earn a 17-13 lead, and charged to the finish from there. It was 18-15 Lewis before the Flyers took seven points in a row, on two kills by Prayer, an ace by Davis and four Matador errors, to take the set.

Set 3: CSUN 25, Lewis 19

CSUN began set three with a 3-0 run. Lewis started to push back, but another 3-0 burst from the Matadors made it 9-5.

After the Flyers used a 4-1 run including two kills to get within one, 11-10, CSUN took off with a 5-0 push to bring the lead to 16-10. Lewis responded by taking three of the next four to make it 17-13 but the Matadors would lead by at least five for the rest of the set, finishing it on a Flyers’ service error.

Set 4: CSUN 25, Lewis 19

An early 3-0 run with two kills and a block assist from Roquet gave Lewis a 4-2 lead in the fourth set. CSUN charged back with an ace to tie it at five.

After some back-and-forth action, the Matadors took a 12-9 lead after a 4-0 run. Kills by Wymoczyl and Roquet brought the Flyers back within one, but it wouldn’t stay close for long.
