Pally, Young-Gomez Finish Weekend With 4 Sweeps

BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 6 California beach volleyball team closed out the Death Volley Invitational on Saturday with a 4-1 victory over No. 17 Florida Atlantic and a 3-2 loss to No. 4 TCU.

Cal’s 3s pair of Marilu Pally and Alexandria Young-Gomez finished off an undefeated 4-0 weekend to lead the Golden Bears, who are now 15-7 overall on the year.

The Bears followed up Friday’s win over No. 10 LSU with a second straight 4-1 triumph, downing FAU (12-11) in their first match of the morning.

Cal’s 3s, 4s and 5s pairings made quick work of their opponents, each earning a sweep and winning every set by at least four points. On court one, Sierra Caffo and Kendall Peters pulled out a three-setter for their first win of the weekend, 21-17, 18-21, 15-10.

The dual win was Cal’s fifth in its last seven matches against top-20 ranked teams.

Looking for their third win against a top-5 team this year, the Bears ended the weekend against No. 4 TCU (19-5) and found themselves even after wave one thanks to another sweep by Boos and Colligan, 21-16, 21-17 in the 4s matchup. 

Pally and Young-Gomez – who had played together just one time prior to this weekend – picked up Cal’s second win of the match, 21-18, 21-19. They finished a perfect 8-for-8 on sets for the weekend, improving to 5-0 as a pair dating back to last year.

However, the Bears’ win streak came to an end as they were defeated by just two points in the third set of both the No. 2 and No. 5 matchups.
