Cal Wins All 10 Matches Over Sacramento State
BERKELEY – The No. 7 California beach volleyball team closed out its home schedule Friday with a pair of 5-0 sweeps over Sacramento State.
The Golden Bears (18-10) sent the graduating class of 2024 off the proper way, winning all 10 matches of the doubleheader with only one set lost on the day. Seniors Allison Mays, Sierra Caffo, Ava Mann, Brooke Buchner, Kendall Peters, and Lara Boos were all honored on the sand in between the contests accompanied by their family and friends.
Cal went with identical lineups for both matches that featured a handful of new pairs. Sophomore Marliu Pally and junior Ella Dreibholz took the sand together for the first time since last season and dominated on court four winning 21-10, 21-10 and 21-17, 21-19. Pally now has 25 total wins in her young career and Dreibholz is nearing a major milestone with 73. Boos and sophomore Portia Sherman paired up for the first time in their careers and nearly held their court five opponents to single digits in all four sets, taking the first match 21-9, 21-8 and the second 21-8, 21-11.
The court two team of freshman Emma Donley and sophomore Gia Fisher evened its season record to 5-5 with two wins in the second spot. Sophomore Amelia Vugrincic and Peters teamed up for the first time and swept away the competition on court three, and the duo of Caffo and junior Alexandria Young-Gomez improved to 4-3 on the year with two wins in the top spot.
Cal will close out the regular season next weekend at the Stanford Invite where the team will see Washington, Grand Canyon, and the host Cardinal.
