No. 7 Cal Sharp In Wins Over Oregon, No. 10 ASU



Bears Knock Off Top-10 Opponent For 2nd Straight Week

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 7 California beach volleyball team took care of business on day two of the Pac-12 South Tournament, earning another 5-0 sweep over Oregon and taking down No. 10 Arizona State 3-2 for its second win of the year over a top-10 opponent.

The Golden Bears (9-3) were on the courts early for the second straight day to play Sunday’s first match against the Ducks (1-10) and looked as sharp as they have all season.

For the seventh time this year, Cal won the dual 5-0. It was also the Bears’ fifth win in which they didn’t drop a single set.

The 1s pairing of senior Sierra Caffo and graduate student Kendall Peters staved off Oregon in the closest set of the match to win 21-12, 21-19. The No. 5 pair of sophomores Portia Sherman and Ella Dreibholz claimed the largest win of the day, 21-9, 21-8.

Following a short break, the Bears were right back at it against tournament host ASU (7-2).

The Sand Devils entered the dual on a high note following their win over No. 2 Stanford less than 24 hours earlier, but they were quickly taken down as Cal took the first three matchups to seal the victory.

The Bears got out to flying starts in the 2s and 4s pairings. Donley and Young-Gomez jumped out to a sharp 6-1 lead and rode it to a 21-19 opening-set win. After dropping set two 21-19, they quickly took over in set three to take a commanding 15-8 victory.

Boos and Buchner also went the distance on court four, holding on in a thrilling back-and-forth battle 21-15, 18-21, 17-15.

Next up on court five, Sherman and Dreibholz held their opponent to single digits for the third straight set in a quick 21-9 win. They finished things off 21-16 in set two to seal Cal’s victory.
