Olson Agrees To Contract Extension Through 2028

SEATTLE – Washington beach volleyball head coach Derek Olson has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the UW through the 2028 season, Director of Athletics Jen Cohen announced on Thursday.

“From the first day I arrived on the campus here at Washington I knew this was a special place,” Olson said. “When I met with Jen Cohen and my sport administrator Jamaal Walton, I could feel that we share the same values.  They’ve invested not only in my family and me, but also the beach volleyball program and our student-athletes.  I couldn’t ask for a better environment to continue to grow both personally and professionally.  It brings me joy to know that I’ll have the privilege of serving each member of this program for years to come, and I will continue striving to be the best that I can be. I’m thankful for Jen, Jamaal and Husky Athletics for their support and trust.  I love the direction that we are headed. Go Dawgs!”

In just two seasons as head coach, Olson took the team to new heights.  In 2023, Coach Olson guided the team to a No. 13 ranking and the first 20-win season in program history.  2023 season was highlighted by wins over No. 17 Arizona, No. 20 Pepperdine and series sweeps over Utah and Oregon.  Under his leadership, seniors Chloe Loreen and Natalie Robinson shattered every Husky Beach Volleyball record and became the first Huskies ever named AVCA Beach Volleyball All-Americans in 2023.

“In just two seasons, Coach Olson has taken Washington beach volleyball to new heights,” said Jen Cohen, Director of Athletics. “He has set a standard for Husky beach volleyball and has developed a culture where elite student-athletes grow and succeed in the classroom and on the sand.  We are excited to extend his contract and have him continue building on the momentum he has started with this program.”
