Panthers Rebound Quickly, Sweep Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, IN –The No. 8 University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (16-3, 7-1 ACC) swept Notre Dame (10-6, 4-4 ACC), 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in South Bend, Indiana. Torrey Stafford once again led the way with 12 kills, a match high. 

Notre Dame and Pitt battled back and forth in the beginning of the first set, as each team went on a pair of mini runs, but a kill from Stafford and Valeria Vazquez Gomez and a few Fighting Irish errors gave Pitt the 15-11 lead going into the media timeout. A pair of Notre Dame errors caused them to take their first timeout. Two more Stafford kills and a kill from Chiamaka Nwokolo forced the Fighting Irish to take their final timeout, with Pitt up 21-12 and was able to finish it out, 25-16.

The Fighting Irish rebounded well in set two, getting out to a 15-8 lead at the media timeout. The Panthers did not back down, going on a 9-4 run behind a pair of kills from Rachel Fairbanks and Emma Monks to bring the score to 19-17. Notre Dame called a timeout, but they responded well, recording two kills to force Pitt to take a timeout. A Stafford kill and a pair of attack errors from Notre Dame forced them to take a timeout, with Pitt up 21-20. The Panthers ultimately finished the match, 25-23. 

The Panthers continued their momentum from the second set, getting off to a 5-1 run. Notre Dame called a timeout, but Pitt didn’t slow down and got out to a 15-8 lead at the media timeout. The Panthers continued putting pressure on the Irish as Blaire Bayless earned a pair of kills off…
