Panthers Sweep Clemson, Start 6-0 in ACC Play

PITTSBURGH –The No. 7 University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (15-2, 6-0 ACC) handled business against Clemson (11-7, 2-4 ACC), 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House. Olivia Babcock led the Panthers with 16 kills, hitting .275. 

Clemson competed well in the first set and was only down two going into the media timeout, 13-15. A Babcock ace and Torrey Stafford kill forced Clemson to take a timeout with Pitt up 17-14. The Tigers came within one at 18-17, but a kill from Valeria Vazquez Gomez and Babcock led Clemson to take their final timeout. Clemson was unable to create a run, and Pitt took the first set, 25-20. 

Like the first set, neither team was able to find much separation. The Tigers took a narrow 15-14 lead into the media timeout thanks to a handful of kills from Clemson’s Azyah Dailey and Katie Hurta. A Rachel Fairbanks ace and a kill from Emma Monks and Babcock forced Clemson to take their first timeout with both teams tied, 17-17. After two Clemson points, Pitt took their own timeout. Cat Flood was aggressive form the service line, registering an ace and went on a 4-0 run to finish the second set, 25-22.

The Tigers didn’t let up, quickly firing back to earn a quick 9-7 lead, forcing Pitt to take a timeout. A handful of Clemson errors and an impressive offensive distribution from Fairbanks brought the Panthers to a 15-13 lead.
