PITTSBURGH – The Panthers start their season at No. 5 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) preseason poll on Tuesday. This is the fourth straight season Pitt has started its season in the top 10.
Pitt plays its season opener on Aug. 25 in Missoula, Mont. against 2022 NCAA Round of 32 participant No. 17 BYU before playing host Montana and UTRGV to close out the weekend. The following weekend the Panthers will compete in a home and away with 2020 National Champion No. 10 Kentucky in Lexington on Sept. 1 and at the Petersen Events Center on Sept. 3.
84 Lumber is serving as the title sponsor for the event that will be co-hosted by both schools with UK hosting the first match and Pitt hosting the second match. Both teams will be aiming to set program attendance marks in an effort to celebrate women’s collegiate athletics.
2022 All-Americans Rachel Fairbanks and Valeria Vazquez Gomez along with 2020 All-American Chiamaka Nwokolo return for the Panthers this season. Nwokolo announced earlier this summer that she will use her fifth and final year of eligibility. Head Coach Dan Fisher brings in the most highly touted recruiting class of his career as the 2023 freshmen class was ranked No. 8 by prepvolleyball.com. In addition, three transfers joined the Panthers this summer. Graduate libero Logan Mosley (Virginia Tech) graduate middle blocker Emma Monks (Michigan State) and junior middle blocker Bre Kelley (University of Florida) look to make a difference on this talented squad.
PITT VOLLEYBALL ON TELEVISION
The Pitt Panthers will play on national television five times this season: once on ESPNU against Louisville on Oct. 13, three times on ACC Network (vs. Kentucky on Sept. 3, vs. Virginia on Oct. 18 and at Georgia Tech on Nov. 10.) and once on SEC Network as they face Kentucky on Sept. 1. The remaining home matches will be available for viewing on ACCNX.
