PHILIPPINES, IRAN, VIETNAM, INDONESIA TRIUMPH ON DAY 3 OF AVC CHALLENGE CUP

Manila, Philippines, May 24, 2024 – Philippines, Iran, Vietnam, Indonesia claimed victory against their respective opponents upon the completion of Day 3 of the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women on Friday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. 

Hosts Philippines scored another win at home after a 3-1 match (22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-18) against India in Pool A. 

Captain and setter Julia De Guzman provided the leadership by running a tight offense, even against a tough and crafty team. They enabled the solid performance of Anne Angel Canino, who delivered 22 points, amongst other players who scored double digits for the victory.

Earlier in Pool A, Iran ignited their first win in Pool A after a 3-1 match (24-26, 25-20, 25-18, 28-26) against Chinese Taipei. 

The Iranian side relied on captain Aytak Salamat (23 points),  Elaheh Poorsaleh (18 points), and Reyhane Karimi (11 points) as a huge boost toward the victory. 

Coach Padideh Boloorizadeh was pleased with the team’s victory, remarking that they had played in system, while allowing a different combination to play together on court. 

Meanwhile in Pool B, Vietnam picked up another victory after completing a 3-1 match (25-14, 25-19, 14-25, 25-23) against Kazakhstan. 

Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen’s massive 30-point haul helped confirm the titleholders’ third straight win in the competition. 

Also in Pool B, Indonesia charted their first win in the competition, completing a 3-0 match (25-14, 25-13, 25-14) against SAVA counterparts Singapore. 

The runners-up from the 2023 edition hosted in Surabaya were without their senior selection but showed their brand of volleyball and chemistry on the court. They ran quality plays anchored on captain Bela Sabrina Agustina, Juanita Santi, and Putri Agustin, who all scored in double figures. 

The Pool Play concludes on Sunday, to determine the ranking and pairings for Tuesday’s semi-finals. The finals scheduled on Wednesday will determine the winning team to qualify for the Volleyball World Challenger Cup scheduled from July 4-7, 2024 in the Philippine capital of Manila.
