Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 19, 2023 – Day 2 of competition at the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women kicked off with Philippines winning in straight sets 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-9) against Macau, China in Monday afternoon’s Pool A match at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium.
Captain Aiza Pontillas (11 points) and Faith Nisperos (10) led the victory with double-digit markers, as the Philippine side dominated in attack, block, and service.
Macau, China showed that they could connect well in offense, especially when they could determine unguarded spots on their opponents’ court. They converted with a good number of attacks and delivered well in several transition plays.
The Philippines likewise struggled in serve-reception but later established their tempo and passed well enough to activate their middle attack.
With their improved rhythm in the frontlines, the Philippine side started to line-up their blocks well and converted with a total of 11 deflections.
When the luxury of a sizable lead loomed over, Philippines’ head coach Jorge Souza De Brito called upon his substitutes, who provided quality minutes and points to key in a 3-0 victory.
“There is no better honor than to be playing for the country. I am really glad that I have this opportunity to play with this group of well-respected players and then some younger ones. It’s an important stepboard for us for our match against Indonesia,” Nisperos said.
The match between Philippines and hosts Indonesia is scheduled as Tuesday’s main event at 19:00 local time. As Macau, China have completed their matches in Pool A, they now await their match-up going into the Classification matches on Wednesday.
