Pitt Falls in Panther Challenge Finale

PITTSBURGH – No. 7 Pitt (7-2) dropped its first home match of the season on Saturday evening inside Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers fell to Towson (10-0) in four-sets (12-25, 23-25, 25-16, 18-25).

  • Lexis Akeo registered a double-double with 16 assists and a team-high 10 digs.
  • Courtney Buzzerio led the team with 13 kills on .409 hitting.
  • She finishes the weekend with the most kills on the team (31) on .455 hitting.
  • Serena Gray led the team in hitting percentage once again, making seven kills on .583 hitting. She ends the weekend with 15 kills and no errors for a .625 hitting percentage.
  • Julianna Dalton hit two aces today, marking her first collegiate multi-ace performance.
  • Pitt out-dug Towson, 41-33. Extending its streak to nine straight matches to start the season.

SET 1: PITT 12 – TOWSON 25
Towson came out with a clear emphasis on their blocking, making five blocks in the first 15 points and getting touches on nearly every Pitt attack. The Tigers jumped in front, 12-3 and never looked back, finishing with nine blocks and winning by 13 points.
 
SET 2: PITT 23 – TOWSON 25
The Panthers settled down in the second set but couldn’t manage to string together enough points to break away. Both teams traded points from 16-16 to 22-22 but a Towson ace gave the Tigers a 24-22 lead ending in a two-point loss.
 
SET 3: PITT 25 – TOWSON 16
Pitt bounced back with a tremendous display of offense in the third. The Panthers started the set on a 12-6 run and never looked…
