Red Dragons Defeat Geneseo in Four Sets to Capture SUNYAC Title and NCAA Berth

The Cortland women’s volleyball team earned its 20th State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title overall and first since 2012 with a four-set victory over visiting Geneseo in the league tournament championship match at Corey Gymnasium.

The top-seeded Red Dragons (26-3) defeated the second-seeded Knights, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 25-13, and earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. The tournament pairings will be announced on Monday at 12:30 p.m. on NCAA.com. 

 

Tournament MVP Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) led Cortland with 16 kills. Joining Van Pelt on the all-tournament team were Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV), who finished with 15 kills and 15 digs, and Carly Haegele (Commack), who led the Red Dragons with 25 digs. 

 

Other all-tournament selections included Geneseo’s Isabella Imbo and Emily Haber, Brockport’s Andrea Coyle and New Paltz’s Melanie Podstupka. 

 

In addition to Van Pelt’s and Southcott’s combined 31 kills, Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) finished with nine kills and three blocks, Caterina Mangogna (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) had six kills and two blocks, and Maya Owens (Nyack) totaled five kills. Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) ended with 24 assists and 13 digs and Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) had 13 assists and eight digs. 

 

Imbo and Linda Rossi led Geneseo (14-12) with 10 kills apiece, followed by Madison Popielski with nine kills. Haber posted 29 digs and two aces, Morgan Michalski had 36 assists and 17 digs, and Jackie Borland finished with…
