Stanford, Calif.- The No. 17 Sand Cats traveled to Stanford to face Pacific University and No. 3 Stanford on Friday, April 12. Arizona fell to Stanford in its first match of the day but came back to defeat Pacific in a 5-0 sweep.
At the No. 1 position, Arizona’s Abby Russell/Olivia McElroy went 1-1 on the day, falling to Stanford’s pair but earning a decisive two-set victory against Pacific. Russell and McElroy now have a pair record of 17-10 (.630).
Pair Hope Shannon/Annie Kost tested Stanford’s No. 2 pair, going back and forth in a three-set match but ultimately falling just short to the Cardinal. Later in the day, Kost and Shannon defeated Pacific 21-13, 21-14. The pair is now 13-4 (.765) on the season.
The Sand Cats made changes to their lineup at No. 3/No. 4 for the day, with pair Jess Horwath/Kate Phillips moving up to the No. 3 spot and Grace Cook/Kylee Fitzsimmons playing at No. 4.
Horwath and Phillips fell short in the first match of the day against the Cardinal, but earned a win for the Sand Cats in a quick two-set match against Pacific later in the afternoon. This was the first tournament the pair played in the No. 3 spot.
Cook and Fitzsimmons went 1-1 for the day, with a two-set victory at No. 4 clinching the win for the Wildcats in the afternoon match against Pacific. The pair is now 10-7 (.588) on the season.
Arizona’s Miranda Erro/Ashlyn Zilliken went 1-1 at the Invitational as well, losing their first match against the Cardinal but securing a point for the Wildcats as a result of a Pacific forfeit at the No. 5 position.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Wildcats will return home after a long road stretch to face in-state rival ASU on Thursday, April 18 at 3 p.m.
