SEASON PREVIEW: Volleyball Men To Lean On Experience

The Eastern Mennonite men’s volleyball team, after a shortened 2020 season, look to make their way back on the court. 

The Royals are coming off of a tough 2020 season, holding a 3-8 record at the time of cancellation. With the team returning eight players from that season, the men are geared to use their experience on the court and with each other to improve in this season and make a name for themselves in the conference. 

Head coach Danielle Lickey, coming into her fourth season, will lean on the experienced roster in the upcoming season. 

Record in 2020: 3-8 (1-3 CVC)
Coach: Danielle Lickey (25-40 overall, 13-15 CVC) Lickey enters her fourth season leading the Royals. 

Season opener in 2020: The Royals kick off the season Saturday, Mar. 6 with a doubleheader against Southern Virginia at Yoder Arena. The start times are 1:00pm and 4:00pm.

Other season highlights: 
-finish the season at Southern Virginia on Tuesday, Mar. 23 at 4:00pm.
-play a doubleheader at home against Randolph-Macon on Saturday, Mar. 20 starting at 2:00pm.
-hosting Marymount on Wednesday, Mar. 17 at 7:00pm.

Interview:

Talk a little bit about the 2020 season – what were some key takeaways that will benefit this year’s team.

The 2020 season was very disappointing to our team. As we started getting off the ground was when the season was cut short by Covid.  The impact on my team was very emotional.  They have found new motivation and fire to get back on the court and move forward.

With a great deal of returners, you’ll be bringing back a decent amount of experience. Talk a little about the benefits of that.

Pretty much the entire team is returners, which is great for the culture and systems we have been working to develop in our game.  We are looking forward to having much of the team return next year as well.

Who are you leaning on as the leaders of this year’s team? Captains?

Our captains are Jacob Durren and Nate McGhee.  Both will make great impacts for the team as leaders and players.

Tell me a little bit about your incoming freshmen class. An overarching statement about them all and highlight a few.

We had three freshmen and a transfer come in this year.  With these four, we were able to add much talent and athleticism.  I am looking forward to seeing our game progress with these additions.
