SEC Recognizes Kerr, Torres with Weekly Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the fifth time in a row, the Tennessee Lady Vols were represented in the SEC weekly honors, as Caroline Kerr and Yelianiz Torres were recognized by the league office Monday afternoon for their performances in road victories at Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

Kerr received her sixth honor of the season by being tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week—her fourth time earning the award. Torres was tabbed SEC Defensive Player of Week, marking her first conference honor of the year. In total, the Lady Vols have won a combined 12 conference honors this season.

Torres, a graduate student libero from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, averaged an SEC-leading 5.86 digs per set to hold down the Lady Vols’ back row in the road wins. For the week, she had 41 digs, seven assists and two aces in seven sets.

At MSU, Torres helped the Big Orange post its most digs in a match this year with 79, recording a season-high 26 digs—the seventh 25-plus dig performance of her career—to go along with seven assists. In the victory at Ole Miss, she finished with a match-high 15 digs and two aces, as UT won its eighth match in a row and posted its 10th sweep of the season.

Kerr, a redshirt-freshman setter from Champaign, Ill., averaged 11.71 assists, 2.29 digs, 1.93 points, 1.29 kills and 0.71 blocks per set—all of which were higher than her seasonal averages—while hitting .615. Despite contributing in all areas of the match, she still ranked third in the conference for the week in assists per set.

Against the Bulldogs, Kerr posted the second double-double of her career with an all-around performance that included 43 assists, a personal-best 13 digs, a career-high-tying six kills on .750 hitting, two blocks and an ace. Against the Rebels, Kerr assisted on 39 of UT’s 44 kills, while chipping in a career-high-tying three blocks, three kills, three digs and one ace, as Tennessee won its eighth straight match and recorded its 10th sweep of the season.

Up next, UT concludes its four-match road streak on Wednesday night, as the Lady Vols take on Alabama for an 8 p.m. ET first serve at Foster Auditorium. The match will be televised on SEC Network.
