Senior Day Sweep For Sand Devils

TEMPE – Senior day for the Sand Devils brought all sorts of good vibes to the Sun Devil Invitational as ASU swept Park 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at the home facility.

For Arizona State (10-11), this is its second sweep of the weekend and third of the season. Junior Taryn Ames and senior Sarah Waters improved their team-best pairs record to 13-8. Waters moved into ninth place in the ASU record book for career wins with 42, putting her in a tie with Oluoma Okaro.

Prior to the dual, seniors Shane Burleson, Maria Kowal, Lexi Sweeney and Sarah Waters were honored for their four-year careers.

The match started out with sweeps by pairs No. 2 and 4 to get the Sand Devils two points over the Buccaneers to start the match. The No. 4 pair senior Maria Kowal and freshman Adriana Nieves Papaleo finished first, defeating their opponents 21-11, 21-9. For Kowal, this was her season debut. The other pair in that flight, freshman MayaMay Brown and junior Maria Kowal, made their season debut together, and for Brown it was her collegiate debut.

The second flight of matches got off to a hot start when the No. 1 duo Lexi Sweeney and Kylie Wickley dominated the first set 21-8.
