SEATTLE — Washington Volleyball’s Sophie Summers was recently named the 2023 Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity’s Scholar Athlete award winner. A four-year member of the squad, Summers recently completed her Bachelors degree majoring in Medical Anthropology & Global Health with a minor in Education, Learning, and Societies.

Last fall, Summers played her biggest on-court role, starting every match and playing all 116 sets at middle blocker. She was fourth on the team with 158 kills and second with a .358 attack percentage. For her career, she had 232 kills in 179 sets, with 146 total blocks, on a .385 attack percentage.

Summers was an active leader in the UW Black Student-Athlete Alliance, serving as co-President.

Of her immediate and long-term goals, Summers says, “Post graduation I have plans to travel for 12 weeks, backpacking around Southern Europe and Southeast Asia. After traveling, I hope to continue internationally, working as a volunteer in education for field experience and conducting my own research. Upon returning to the United States, I hope to attend graduate school, and eventually a Ph.D. program, with the goal of becoming a professor, writing a book, and being a part of important social justice conversations.”
