Sun Devil Invitational This Weekend For Sand Devils


TEMPE – Sun Devil Beach Volleyball is back in Tempe this weekend to host the Sun Devil Invitational from April 14-15 at the facility, bringing in No. 7 GCU, Utah and Park. The dual against Park on Saturday will be Senior Day.

Fan Information

Every dual this weekend will be free to the public. Fans are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs to sit on in the grass. Pets are not allowed. For those not in attendance, the ASU duals will be on the ASU Live Stream, with live scoring available for every matchup. 

The Sand Devils will be honoring their seniors at their game against Park at 2 p.m. MST on April 15. Shane Burleson, Maria Kowal, Lexi Sweeney and Sarah Waters will be recognized prior to the dual for all their hard work and support that they have given the team over their time as a Sand Devil.

  • 9:00 a.m.: Utah vs. ASU
  • 11:00 a.m.: GCU vs. Park
  • 1:00 p.m.: Utah vs. Park
  • 3:00 p.m.: GCU vs. ASU

April 15

  • 10:00 a.m.: Utah vs. Ottawa
  • 12:00 p.m.: Utah vs. GCU
  • 2:00 p.m.: Park vs. ASU (Senior Day)

Sun Devil Outlook 

Arizona State (8-10, 4-5 Pac-12)

  • The Sand Devils are coming off of a challenging Pac-12 North Tournament, where the team went 1-3. The group secured a 3-2 win against the Oregon Ducks, with the No. 1 pair of Lexi Sweeney and Kylie Wickley clinching the win for the Devils.
  • The lineup saw some shakeup over the weekend. The two pairs that have stuck together for the entire season are Sweeney and Wickley, and Taryn Ames and Sarah Waters.
  • Courts No. 3 and 5 prove to be the winningest courts for the Sand Devils with a record of 10-8. Duo Ames and Waters have been solid on court No. 3, with a 6-5 record, though they have jumped around on various courts for a 10-8 record. While the freshman pair of Carys Thomas and Adriana Nieves Papaleo have owned court No. 5 with an undefeated 4-0 record.
  • Four Sun Devils are ranked in the top 15 in the ASU record book for career wins. Waters is at No. 10 with 39 wins, three away from ninth place. Right behind her are Sweeney and Ames, who both have 37 wins in 11th place. In 14th place is junior Kate Fitzgerald with 30.
