Tech Concludes Memorable Season in Second Round of NCAA Tournament – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

MILWAUKEE — No. 5 seed Georgia Tech volleyball fell 3-0 to No. 4 seed Marquette (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) in the Second Round of the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship on Friday night at the Al McGuire Center as its historic season concluded. The White and Gold finished with 21 wins on the year, marking three consecutive traditional seasons with 20 or more wins.

Senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann fronted the squad in kills one final time with 13, while sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino pitched in seven kills and a team-high 14 digs. Junior setter Bella D’Amico ran the attack, compiling 23 assists.

How it Happened

The Yellow Jackets got on a roll early in the first set, winning four straight points thanks in large part to three Bergmann kills to move in front, 6-2. Tech (21-8, 13-5 ACC) maintained its lead up to an 8-4 advantage, but Marquette (29-3, 17-1 Big East) bounced back to come away with seven of the next eight points and slip ahead, 11-9. The Golden Eagles avoided surrendering the lead up to a 15-14 advantage, but Georgia Tech used a three-point run to regain the lead, 17-15. Marquette evened things up at 17, resulting in seven following tie score lines pushing the match to 23 all. The Golden Eagles took the next two points, wrapping up the set with a three-point burst for a 25-23 set one win.

Marquette carried its momentum over into the second set, winning the first three points and moving up to an 8-4 advantage. The Yellow Jackets took five of the next six point to even things up at nine apiece, but three more to follow by the Golden Eagles pushed them back ahead, 12-9. After a Tech point next, the two sides alternated the next 10 points up to a 17-15 lead for Marquette. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 21-17, holding on to close things out for a 25-20 victory in set two.

Marquette remained hot starting off the third set, taking the first four points and pushing further to a 7-1 lead. Winning six of the next eight points, the White and Gold climbed right back into it to trail by one, 9-8. The Golden Eagles responded with three consecutive points, however, increasing separation to 13-8. As the back-and-forth battle continued, Georgia Tech matched Marquette’s burst with a three-point run of its own, moving back within three to trail 14-11.
