Athens, Tenn.- The volleyball team concluded their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) weekend of play on Saturday. The team hosted the Bluefield University Lady Rams in James L. Robb Gymnasium.
Kills by Gabby Harris, Marjorie Smith, Jenna Huppert, and Ariana Smith helped the team pull within one point of the lead early in the first set. The team could not pull closer though as Bluefield moved out to a 13-9 advantage. Points by Aly Grace Lemons made the deficit 16-13 but a 9-4 run over the remainder of the match gave the visitors the first set by a score of 25-17.
A service ace by Grayson Fleming during her serve in the second set gave the Lady Bulldogs a 4-3 advantage. As the set moved deeper, Tennessee Wesleyan maintained the lead on a Harris kill and a Haylie Peoples block solo to make the score 15-13. The tide in the set shifted though when Bluefield ended the set on a 12-3 run to win the second set 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead.
A kill by Olivia Miller and block by M. Smith helped the team lead 2-0 in the third set. Points went back and forth from that point and an A. Smith kill made the team’s lead 7-6. The visiting Lady Rams took control of the third set though by scoring 14 of the next 20 points, moving the lead to their side as the scoreboard read 20-12. A Maggie Olson service ace and Kali Bowie block solo were not enough to bring the team back, falling in the third set 25-19 and in the match 3-0.
M. Smith led the offense with six kills while Jayda Perry and Olivia Bolin tied for the assist lead with 11 each. Cierra Willams led with 16 digs while Olson had a career-high 13 digs.
The loss moved the team’s record to 3-19 overall and 1-12 in the AAC.
