Bluefield, Va.- After playing in Kentucky the night before, the volleyball team found themselves in Virginia Saturday morning for their next match. The schedule took the team across another set of state lines for a conference match against the Bluefield University Lady Rams.

Olivia Bolin opened the first set of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest with a service ace. Bluefield took the lead over the next few points but the set remained close. A kill by Megan Lee put the set in a 10-10 tie. The opponents broke the tie though with four straight points. TWU battled back to tie the set 16-16 on an Olivia Miller kill. Bluefield broke the tie again and carried the momentum to a 25-19 first set win.

The combination of kills by Madison Coffey and Amya Sutton along with a Megan Thompson service ace gave the Lady Bulldogs a 3-2 lead early in the second set. The opponents scored 10 straight points over the next segments of the match to take the lead. The team was not able to get the lead back in their favor, falling 25-15 in the second set.

The first four points of the third set were scored by the Lady Bulldogs. Points from Shante Smith, Sutton, and Bolin pushed the team out to a 4-0 lead. Kamari Jackson helped extend the lead to 5-1. The points kept growing for Tennessee Wesleyan, who held a 15-9 lead deep into the set. A kill by Kali Bowie moved the team’s lead to 19-14 as the team looked to extend the match. A momentum shift occurred though as Bluefield went on a scoring rally that saw them take a 23-21 lead. The opponents scored the two points needed to end the set, winning 25-22 to take the match 3-0.

Sutton led with six kills in the match to go along with 11 assists from Bolin. Thompson led the defense with 15 digs.

Up next for the Lady Bulldogs is a home contest against Montreat College on Tuesday. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
