USC Claims Crosstown Cup In 2022-23 Rivalry Competition

USC Athletics | May 31, 2023

For the 13th time in 21 years of competition, USC has won back the rights to the Crosstown Cup — the annual head-to-head all-sports competition with crosstown rival UCLA. The Trojans now hold a 13-8 all-time lead over the Bruins in the history of the Cup competition.

USC outscored UCLA 105-85 in 2022-23 competition, with Trojan baseball’s head-to-head advantage over the Bruins sealing the deal for USC’s 13th Crosstown Cup victory. In all, USC had 10 teams claim the full 10 points on head-to-head battles with the Bruins. Women’s volleyball recorded the first win of the season over the Bruins, going on to secure 10 points for the Trojan cause in the fall while baseball topped things off in the spring. Also bringing home 10 points for USC were soccer, football, women’s swimming & diving, men’s golf, rowing, women’s track & field, men’s tennis and women’s water polo. Men’s basketball also snagged five points for USC with a season split.

In the case of a tie, USC also had the 2022-23 advantage on the first tiebreaker, with the Trojans edging out the Bruins in regular-season head-to-head competition 17-16.

Each of the 19 sports in which both USC and UCLA field teams counts for 10 points. All 10 points for a sport are awarded to the winner of the most head-to-head contests in that sport (if both schools win an equal amount of matchups in a sport, the 10 points are split). For sports that do not feature a head-to-head competition between the schools (cross country and men’s golf in 2022-23), the highest finisher in Pac-12 or Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship play determines who gets the 10 points.

The winner of the Crosstown Cup alternated for the first six years of the competition. After USC captured the inaugural trophy in 2001-02, the Cup traded hands though 2006-07 before the Trojans then went on a five-year winning run from 2007-08 to 2011-12. UCLA won it back in 2012-13, and then the schools traded it again through 2015-16. UCLA then claimed it back-to-back in 2016-17 and 2017-18. The Trojans were victorious in 2018-19 before 2019-20 competition was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. USC won again in 2020-21, and then UCLA earned last year’s Cup for the Bruins’ eighth such effort.
