Men’s Volleyball | June 24, 2024
LOS ANGELES – The USC men’s volleyball program has signed graduate transfer middle blocker Guy Genis (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance HS/UCLA) ahead of the 2024-25 season, head coach Jeff Nygaard announced on Monday, June 24.
“We’re excited to welcome Guy Genis to our Trojan volleyball family,” said Nygaard. “He brings some top-level experience and an international perspective that will benefit our team both on and off the court.”
Genis won back-to-back NCAA championships with UCLA (2023, ’24) during three seasons with the Bruins. He is a three-time MPSF All-Academic Team member and a two-time selection to UCLA’s Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (2021, ’22). He appeared in 76 matches and saw action in 245 sets for the Bruins. Genis compiled 316 kills (1.29 kps) with a .463 career hitting percentage and recorded 260 blocks (1.06 bps). He also had 75 digs, 21 service aces, and 19 assists while averaging 1.97 points per set.
As a senior in 2024, Genis ranked fifth in the MPSF for blocks (1.01 bps) and hit at least .300 in 15 matches. He earned AVCA All-America honorable mention and MPSF all-conference honorable mention in 2023. That season, he tied UCLA’s school record for solo blocks in the rally scoring era (19) and finished fourth in the NCAA with a 1.21 blocks per set average. He was both the MPSF Defensive Player of the Week and Off the Block’s national Middle Attacker of the Week that year. In 2022, Genis was named the MPSF Freshman of the Year and was a second-team All-MPSF choice. He finished his first collegiate campaign as the 15th-ranked blocker in the nation (0.96 bps) and hit at least .500 in 17 contests. Genis initially enrolled at UCLA in 2021 but was not able to travel to the U.S. due to pandemic protocols.
The Trojans were 13-15 in the regular season, finished sixth in the MPSF standings (3-9), and were 13th in the final AVCA Coaches Poll. In the postseason, USC advanced to the MPSF tournament semifinal where it fell to league runner-up UCLA. The Trojans earned six wins over ranked opponents and ninth-year head coach Jeff Nygaard reached 100-career victories.
