VICTORY FOR VIETNAM IN 3-0 MATCH ON HOSTS PHILIPPINES

Pasig City, Philippines, August 21, 2022 – Vietnam braved the roaring crowd in the main event at the PhilSports Arena, as they beat hosts Philippines 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 31-29) in Pool A of the preliminary round of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women.

Vietnam captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy tallied 20 points, scoring off 17 attacks, 2 service winners and a block. Philippines’ outside hitter Jessica Margarett Galanza scored 13 points in the loss on Sunday evening.

Vietnam clearly imposed their height advantage by enforcing their block defense. While they were making their own share of attack errors, the Vietnamese were able to close out their blocks.

The host team needed to be more crafty in their offense in order to outplay the opponents’ blockers. Setter Kyle Angela Negrito enabled her hitters Galanza and Diana Mae Carlos from the wing. Opposite Michele Theresa Gumabao was able to score in transition.

Vietnam was quick enough to adjust with their block in order to prevent any scoring runs from their opponents. Further to this, Pham Thi Nguyen Anh connected from the wing while Tran Thi Bich Thuy activated the middle attack.

Energized by the spectators at the PhilSports Arena, Philippines showed how they could deliver dazzling plays and prolong exhilarating rallies against a stronger team. However, the hosts were unable to establish their rightful tempo and consistent play.

Even as the Philippines brought the home crowd back to life to extend the third set, Vietnam proved they could handle their endgame better.

Vietnam’s best finish in the competition’s history was a final four appearance in the third edition held in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2012. Their next encounter will be against China on Monday, August 22 at 13:00.

Meanwhile, hosts Philippines will head to a rest day and resume play on Tuesday, August 23, against China in the 19:00 match. All local times.
