Manila, Philippines, May 26, 2024 – Vietnam completed a sweep of Pool B of the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women after winning 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 27-25, 25-13) against Indonesia on Sunday morning at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
In a rematch of the final showdown in the 2023 edition in Surabaya, Vietnam powered through a solid performance with 65 attacks, and 5 blocks They also performed rather well from the service line, scoring 8 aces while minimizing their error count.
Vi Thi Nhu Quynh boosted Vietnam’s performance, posting 26 points, with four more players adding double-digits to the victory.
The defending champions have fielded their strongest possible roster to open AVC volleyball season, representing their bid well even with captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy watching from the sidelines.
Meanwhile, 2023 runners-up Indonesia have found some of their new stars in this roster. The 16-year old starter Junaida Santi played without fear or hesitation. She operated from the wings and at times, could unload from the backcourt. Captain Bela Sabrina Agustina, belonging to Indonesia’s second selection, also put out impressive plays in clutch sequences. The young players scored 24 points and 21 points respectively in the defeat.
Against such fearless young players, Vietnam played according to their plan, opening up the offense to as many options possible. They moved well in transition as orchestrated by setter Vo Thi Kim Thoa.
After recording their fourth consecutive win, Vietnam take the top spot in Pool B to position themselves for strong contention toward the title.
The competition heads to a halt on Monday, as the teams’ rest and recovery day. The semi-finals set on Tuesday will determine the teams to battle for the crown, and the right to play in the Volleyball World Challenger Cup, scheduled in Manila, Philippines in early July.
