Vikings Complete Comeback, Defeat Mount Mercy in Five Sets

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Grand View women’s volleyball team was back on the road for a midweek conference showdown against Mount Mercy University on Tuesday night. The Vikings put a display of resiliency as they mounted a comeback victory over the Mustangs with scores of 15-25, 22-25, 25-11, 25-15, and 15-13.

Set 1: Grand View University 15 l Mount Mercy University 25

Grand View got off to a fast start in the first set as it claimed an early four-point advantage after a kill from Taylor Carey (SR/Waukee, IA) made it 8-4. The momentum switched over to the Mustangs a few points later following a 4-0 scoring run that allowed Mount Mercy to jump in front, 11-13. The Vikings struggled to find any offense from there and Mount Mercy secured the set by going on a 6-0 scoring streak to end it.

Set 2: Grand View University 22 l Mount Mercy University 25

In the second set, the Vikings found themselves down early, 1-7, as Mount Mercy strung together another scoring run. Through the middle stages of the set, Grand View fought to make dents in the Mount Mercy lead and eventually pulled within one-point after Emily Box (JR/West Point, IA) scored a kill to make it 16-17. However, that would be as close as Grand View would get. The Mustangs were able to fend off any offensive attack from the Vikings and go up two sets to none.

Set 3: Grand View University 25 l Mount Mercy University 11

The match took a turning point in the third set with a dominating performance from Grand View. After the two squads drew even at 7-7, the Vikings offense found the rhythm it had been looking for and went a 7-0 scoring run. Carey was the leader of another scoring run a few moments later as she scored three kills over a five-point stretch, which put the score at 22-9. To close out the set, Grand View once again played through the hot hand of Carey and the senior added two more kills to her total to get the Vikings on the board.

Set 4: Grand View University 25 l Mount Mercy University 15

The fourth set began with Grand View gaining a slight advantage due to some errors made by Mount Mercy and the Vikings went up 9-6. A 5-0 scoring streak, led by Carey and Rylie Olson (SR/Osage, IA), increased the Vikings lead to seven through the middle stages with the score now 16-9. Grand View remained steady for the remainder of the set and was able to even the match to force a fifth and final set.
