Des Moines, IA – The Grand View women’s volleyball team closed out its weekend with a conference match against Benedictine College on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings were able to earn another win as they defeated in the Ravens in four sets with scores of 25-17, 20-25, 26-24, and 26-24.
Set 1: Grand View University 25 l Benedictine College 17
The Vikings got out to a good start in the first set after a couple of scoring runs led them to a 11-5 lead. Grand View then increased its lead to 10 when Sydney Beasley (SO/Darlington, WI) scored back-to-back kills, which put the score at 18-8. Benedictine was able to go on a run a little while later that cut the score to 23-16 but kills from Taylor Carey (SR/Waukee, IA) and Ellie Dougherty (FR/Omaha, NE) secured the set win for the Vikings.
Set 2: Grand View University 20 l Benedictine College 25
In the second set, Grand View and Benedictine went back-and-forth to start until the Vikings took advantage of some Raven errors to go up 9-6. The Ravens offense eventually got into a groove over the middle stage of the set and took the lead over from Grand View at 14-16. Another kill from Carey saw the Vikings cut the deficit down to two at 19-21, but the Ravens held off the comeback attempt and took the set.
Set 3: Grand View University 26 l Benedictine College 24
Grand View found itself down to begin the third set after Benedictine scored four points in a sequence of five possible to take an 8-12 advantage. The Vikings immediately countered with a 4-0 run, capped by a service ace by Chevy Wagner-Chun (JR/Waianae, HI) to knot the match even, 12-12. Grand View then took the lead a few moments later after three consecutive kills from Emily Box (JR/West Point, IA), Rylie Olson (SR/Osage, IA) and Beasley and forced the Ravens to call timeout. Down the stretch the Ravens were able to retake a one-point lead at 23-24, but once again the Vikings countered with a 3-0 scoring run that won them set.
Set 4: Grand View University 26 l Benedictine College 24
The Vikings continued to play through the hot hand of Beasley in the fourth set and she gave them a 10-8 lead after another kill. Over the middle stage the two squads couldn’t break away from each and Benedictine ended up jumping in front, 16-17.
