Virginia Volleyball || Cavaliers Fall to Maryland, 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team (8-3) dropped its final match of the Cavaliers’ non-conference slate to Maryland (9-3), 19-25, 20-25, 21-25, in Memorial Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Grace Turner and Chloe Wilson represented the Hoos on the all-tournament team. Turner led UVA in kills per set (3.08) and averaged 1.83 digs per set. She posted back-to-back double-digit kill performances, including a double-double against East Carolina on Friday (Sept. 16). Wilson was second on the squad in kills per set (2.17) and tied her career high of 15 kills and hit. 480 against the Pirates.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Terrapins took the opening set, 25-19, after Virginia posted just eight kills and nine attack errors. No player on either team had more than two kills in game No. 1. The Terrapins hit just .185.
  • Virginia seemed to turn things around early in the second after leaping out to a 10-4 lead, but Maryland gradually chipped away the Cavalier lead. The Terrapins scored three straight points to secure an 18-17 advantage after which UVA signaled for time. The two teams were tied 19-19 before the Terrapins closed out the second on a 6-1 run to the win the game, 25-20, and command a 2-0 lead at the break.
  • Game No. 3 was competitive throughout, featuring 10 tied scores and four lead changes. However, it was once again Maryland that made plays down the stretch. After the score was tied, 18-18, the Terrapins fired off four straight points before ultimately winning the set, 25-21, and match. Virginia outside hitter Brooklyn Borum put down four kills in the third frame on 10 swings and hit .300.

NOTES
