CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – To close out the weekend road trip, the Virginia volleyball team (17-4, 7-3 ACC) prevailed over the Boston College Eagles (9-13, 2-8 ACC) in five sets (25-20, 25-14, 21-25, 21-25, 15-12) on Sunday afternoon at the Connell Recreation Center.
The win moves UVA to 7-3 in league play, the most ACC wins in a season since 2015.
Elayna Duprey had a match-high 18 kills and a career-best four service aces on Sunday to lead the Virginia attack. In addition to Duprey, Brooklyn Borum picked up her second double-double of the year with a season-high 14 kills and 15 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1: Virginia 25, Boston College 20
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 7-2 advantage in the early going of the opening set. UVA led by as many as eight at 15-7 before the Eagles jumped back into the set with an 11-2 run through the heart of the frame. Following a 19-19 tie, the Hoos tallied six of the final seven points to take the opening game.
Set 2: Virginia 25, Boston College 14
Virginia kept the momentum going with a 10-1 run to open the second set of the afternoon. After trading a handful of points, a 5-0 UVA run put the set out of reach at 18-6 and never looked back. All four of Duprey’s match-high service aces came in the second set.
Set 3: Boston College 25, Virginia 21
In a set that saw 13 ties and seven lead changes, the two squads battled to a 16-16 tie before a 4-1 run put UVA out front 20-17. Coming out of the BC timeout at 20-17, the Eagles scored eight of the final nine points to claim the third set.
Set 4: Boston College 25, Virginia 21
The tug-of-war continued deep into the fourth set as the teams traded points until the set was tied at 14-all. Boston College climbed out front for good at 21-17 and held off a Virginia comeback to force a fifth set.
Set 5: Virginia 15, Boston College 12
The fifth and final set had five ties but only one lead change, as the Cavaliers took control at 6-5 with a Zooey Dood Kill. Boston College threatened with a pair of late kills before Borum sealed the victory for Virginia with a kill of her own.
WITH THE WIN
- With an overall record of 17-4, Virginia is off to its best start since 2003.
