CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Virginia volleyball team (9-14, 2-11 ACC) fell to Miami (16-7, 9-4 ACC) on Friday night (Nov. 3) in four sets (12-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23).

Veresia Yon led the Hoos with 14 kills and two errors on 21 swings (.571 hitting percentage) to go along with seven blocks, while Ciera Hecht added 13 kills on .478 hitting percentage.

Set 1: Miami 25, Virginia 12
The Hoos never led in the opening frame of the match and opened the set in an 11-4 deficit as the Hurricanes quickly scored seven unanswered points. Miami later built on their lead by going on a 6-0 run to keep things out of reach for the Cavaliers. Virginia tallied six kills on -.037 percent to Miami’s 17 kills on .469 hitting percentage.

Set 2: Miami 25, Virginia 21
The Cavaliers were able to battle the Hurricanes more closely in the second set after tallying 17 kills on .433 hitting percentage. Virginia was able to pull within one point of Miami [19-18], but the Canes answered with a 4-1 scoring burst to pull away. Hecht recorded five kills with no errors on six swings in the second set.

Set 3: Virginia 25, Miami 19
After the break, the two sides traded blows for much of the period, with neither team able to take a sizable lead over the other. With the Hoos up by three [20-17], Virginia scored five of the last seven points, claiming the third frame from an Ashley Le service ace. Yon threw down six kills on six attempts, as well as three blocks to help lift the Hoos in set No. 3.

Set 4: Miami 25, Virginia 23
Virginia built on its momentum from the previous set after taking a commanding 15-5 lead over Miami to open up the frame. The Canes chipped away at the Virginia lead with multiple short bursts of scoring, eventually erasing the 10-point deficit and leveling the set at 19 apiece. The Hoos attempted to reclaim their earlier lead, but Miami was able to edge Virginia 6-4 down the final stretch.

MATCH NOTES

  • With the win, Miami extends its lead in the all-time series 20-9 and have now won the last 12 matchups with the Cavaliers.
  • Setters Ashley Le and Regan Trueblood each tallied 23 assists.
  • Ciera Hecht tied her season high in kills with 13.
  • Veresia Yon led all players in blocks with seven.
  • Yon also finished with a hitting percentage of .571 (14 kills, two errors, 21 attempts).
