Virginia Volleyball || Virginia Kicks Off 45th Season With Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Volleyball team is set to begin its 2023 campaign this weekend by hosting the Cavalier Classic (Aug. 25-26), a four-team winner’s bracket tournament, from Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers are set to face Rider in their season opener on Friday (Aug. 25) at 7 p.m. and will take on either Rutgers or North Carolina A&T on Saturday (Aug. 26) at either noon or 2:30 p.m.

All UVA volleyball regular-season matches held in Mem Gym are free to the public.


BROADCAST INFORMATION

  • Both of Virginia’s matches will be streamed on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX) through the ESPN app, which is available through participating TV providers that carry ACC Network.
  • Live stats will also be available for both matches and can be accessed through the volleyball schedule page on VirginiaSports.com

PARKING INFORMATION

  • Fans planning to attend Virginia volleyball matches this season are encouraged to park in the Culbreth, Central Grounds or Emmet/Ivy parking garages utilizing the ParkMobile app.

SEASON OVERVIEW

  • This year marks the 45th season of Virginia Volleyball, which held its inaugural season in 1979.
  • In 44 complete seasons, UVA is 662-749 (.469)
  • The Cavaliers are set to host 14 home matches in 2023.
  • For the first time in history, Virginia will face Rider (Aug. 25) and Quinnipiac (Sept. 1).
  • Head coach Shannon Wells will be entering her third season at the helm

SERIES HISTORY

  • The Cavaliers will face Rider for the first time on program history on Friday night (Aug. 25)
  • Virginia will face either Rutgers or North Carolina A&T on Saturday (Aug. 26). UVA is 4-1 all-time against Rutgers and 1-0 against North Carolina A&T. 
  • The Cavaliers are 27-17 (.614) all-time in season openers and have won eight of its last 10 season openers. The Hoos have out-matched their opponents 89-60 in total sets all-time in season openers. 

VIRGINIA WELCOMES SEVEN NEWCOMERS IN 2023

  • Of UVA’s 16 active players, seven of them are new to the program.
  • The Cavaliers’ 2023 roster features three transfers: defensive specialist/libero Milan Gomillion (Maryland), outside hitter Ciera Hecht (Texas A&M) and setter Regan Trueblood (Illinois Springfield).
  • The Hoos are also welcoming in four freshmen: defensive specialist/libero Meredith Reeg, middle blocker Nala Cornegy, middle blocker Lily Gervase and outside hitter/right side hitter Lauryn Bowie.
