Virginia Volleyball || Wofford Topples Cavaliers; Gomillion, Wilson Named All-Tournament Selections

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Wofford volleyball team (9-2) came back to defeat Virginia (7-3) Saturday afternoon (Sept. 16) in Memorial Gymnasium in the final match of the Jefferson Cup Invitational.

Virginia’s Milan Gomillion and Chloe Wilson were named to the all-tournament team. Gomillion finished the weekend with 30 digs (4.29) while Wilson tallied 18 kills (.342 hitting percentage) and five blocks.

Set 1: Virginia 25, Wofford 17
Both teams were knotted 8-8 before UVA embarked on a 9-1 run, which was highlighted by aces from Ashley Le and Brooklyn Borum, to take a commanding lead. The Cavaliers finished the first with four aces. Willson tallied five kills on nine swings and Gomillion posted eight digs in the opening frame. UVA sided out on 12 of the Terriers’ 17 serves.

Set 2: Wofford 25, Virginia 23
The Terriers evened the match after pulling off a late-set comeback. The Cavaliers led 21-19 when Wofford scored four straight to flip the score. A Terrier’s ball-handling error followed by a UVA block evened the score 23-23, prompting a Wofford timeout. Coming out of the break, the Terriers scored back-to-back points to close out the set. Game No. 2 was close throughout as it featured 12 tied scores and six lead changes.

Set 3: Wofford 25, Virginia 15
Coming out of the intermission, Wofford grasped the first two points of the third and never trailed for the remainder of the set. The Terriers led 13-12 midway through when they exploded on a 9-1 run to run away with the set. The Cavaliers errored on 14 of their 37 attacks, including six Wofford blocks. The Terriers sided out on 12 of UVA’s 16 serves, while UVA managed to side out just 11 times on 24 Terrier serve attempts.

Set 4: Wofford 25, Virginia 20
Set No. 4 saw two early lead changes, but five unanswered points by the Terriers early in the set proved to be the difference. Wofford led by as many as six [22-16] before going on to claim the set and match in the fourth. The Terriers only committed two attack errors and hit .464 in the final frame.

MATCH NOTES

  • With the win, the Terriers claimed the first match of the inaugural series between the two teams.
  • Lauryn Bowie led all players with 13 kills.
