HOUSTON, Texas – Alabama volleyball tallied a season-high 63 kills to close its weekend at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup Saturday afternoon with a four-set win over Central Arkansas.
Alabama (4-2) and Central Arkansas (3-3) were neck-and-neck early in the opening set until the Tide went on an 8-1 run to add some cushion to its lead. Alabama held on to win set one, 25-17, but trailed early in the second set, taking a timeout down 10-6. The Tide fought back to tie it at 12-12 but could not retake the lead as the Sugar Bears won 25-16 to even the match. Alabama bounced back with a huge start in the third set, leading 14-2 after a run that included four aces from Abby Marjama. The Tide won that set, 25-17, and after seven tie scores in the fourth Alabama closed it out with a 9-5 run to win, 25-21, and take the match in four sets.
Three players had double-digit kills, led by a season-best 18 kills from Micah Gryniewicz. Emily Janek posted her third double-double of the weekend (37 assists, 16 digs) and the 16th of her career. Laila Smith made her season debut, stuffing a career-best eight blocks.
